From the New York Times Bestselling author of the forthcoming THE NAMES OF DEAD GIRLS, THE SILENT GIRLS and LIE IN WAIT comes a smoldering and devastating literary crime novel in the tradition of Daniel Woodrell, Larry Brown, and Tom Franklin, and heralded by the New York Times as "Intoxicating. Creepy. Poetic. Arresting. Powerfully bloody." In this hard-edged, quick-moving, and violent tale, a young fatherless boy is unwittingly lured into a murderous plot in the Gothic backwoods of Northern Vermont when he bonds with a paranoid ex-con he's unaware is bent on revenge. All tempered by a fine lyric sensibility and an awareness of people and place that sings with evocation and authenticity.

THE NEW YORK TIMES SUNDAY BOOK REVIEW
Remarkable. Intoxicating. Arresting. Poetic.
A tale of macho violence and alternative horticulture in a creepy edge-of-the-world setting. The body count is high, and the violence persuasive. Most remarkable is the evocation of the territory, the Gothic tangle of native forest and exotic cash crop that mirrors the characters’ claustrophobic inner landscapes [and] the grimly poetic images scattered throughout, like flashes of submerged lives never quite reeled in.

SUNDAY CLEVELAND PLAIN DEALER
A bloody beauty. Reap illuminates worlds of darkness. A dramatic reminder of the mystery and majesty of the wild places that exist in both man and nature.

LOS ANGELES TIMES BOOK REVIEW
A complex portrait of a group of people whose interlocking fates snap into place with gruesome repercussions and of a boy who unwittingly stumbles into adulthood like a bird dog into a wolf trap.

PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Harrowing. Absorbing. Unpredictable. Dangerous.
Bucolic and eerie, it probes the mysteries of growing as plants people and situations twist inexorably in unpredictable, dangerous directions. A progressively more harrowing, absorbing tale.

BOOK MAGAZINE
Transcends the typical. Harrowing. Inevitable.
Rickstad renders dark, often violent characters with such elegance that we will embrace them long after they’ve opted for the choice that is clearly wrong.

BOOKLIST
Rickstad pulls back the veneer of the bucolic wilderness of northern Vermont and finds trouble in paradise. Colorful, marginal, and often violent characters, and the undertone of violence, desperation, and drug dealing as a way of life underscores the fact that the country joins the inner city in becoming a modern American wasteland.

WEEKLY ALIBI
A haunting, dark story that seethes with human emotion. Turning each page is like opening the door to an open field.

Reap edition by Eric Rickstad Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

Spurred by poverty, lack of a decent upbringing or education, and stuck in small towns without any opportunity, the characters choose dangerous paths to fulfill dreams and escape their dismal surroundings. Each character's path collides with the other's as events spiral out of control. Some of their fates were not surprising; it was just a matter of time. A bit different storyline than The Silent Girls, yet still a decent read.

Loved this book..it was just as thrilling as i expected.
Fast paced page turner. The character development is absorbing. The setting is a place none of us would like to go. I kept wanting my favorite new aquintances to make better choices. I found myself thinking, "Oh no don't do that!".
This book was totally different from the last book written by Eric Rock star.
I found it be be too depressing and overly violent for my taste.
I Will say,it was very descriptive

I enjoy Mr. Rickstad's writing; however, I found the overall story for this book to be limited. I was looking for more of a mystery, like what was present in the first books of his that I read. This one was interesting but seemed much slower than those other books. I did enjoy the ending but found the build up to be too slow and ponderous.
In the novel, a naive boy is drawn into a seedy world of pot dealers, feuds, revenge and murder.
The scenes and characters are so vividly written you can almost smell sweat and blood and feel blows landing.
The characters are unusual, sometimes revolting, but mesmerizing nonetheless.
If you've got the stomach, this is a fabulous novel. It's full of real characters living real, and depressing, lives. The novel is not completely without hope and it is not a depressing read, mainly because of Rickstad's talented storytelling. What makes Reap so interesting is not so much the story, but the telling of the story. The novel centers around Jessup, a young fatherless teenage boy, spending his summer just drifting around, fishing, riding his bike, until he meets up with Reg, a recent ex-con with a crop of marijuana he wants to protect, and many enemies. Rickstad explores the lives of his characters and brings them to life. His depiction of their lives rings true, there is no sugarcoating, there is no contrived happy ending. Just talented writing, wonderful storytelling.
This "coming of age" novel set in the backwoods of Vermont showcases a promising young novelist who will likely get better as he masters his craft. His strong points are his ability to create vivid descriptive language and his ability to capture the essence of certain character types that undoubtedly can be found in rural New England. Sometimes his earnest attention to detail betrays him, however, as his attempt to include elements of New England natural history fall flat (e.g., his placing of a Snowy owl in the middle of a dense forest--highly unlikely).
That Eric Rickstad is young and still learning is evidenced, however, by the curious pacing of the story. The first half of the book "sets the stage" for the events that follow, and at times the substitution of description and nuance for actual story line becomes bothersome. During last half of the book, however, the action, including generous doses of blood, gore, humiliation and heartbreak, is practically nonstop. Ultimately, the book's plot resembles pulp fiction more than it does "great literature," and the "coming of age" theme is eclipsed, sadly, by the book's sizable body count.
